Today we are going to look at a popular decorative fixture in the design world, the topiary! They are just oh-so stylish and oh-so amazing!!! Here’s a quick look into what exactly a topiary is all about!
Topiary is the horticultural practice of training live perennial plants by clipping the foliage and twigs of trees, shrubs and subshrubs to develop and maintain clearly defined shapes, perhaps geometric or fanciful. The term also refers to plants which have been shaped in this way. As an art form it is a type of living sculpture.
The plants used in topiary are evergreen, mostly woody, have small leaves or needles, produce dense foliage, and have compact and/or columnar growth habits. Common species chosen for topiary include cultivars of European box, arborvitae, bay laurel, holly, myrtle, yew, and privet. Shaped wire cages are sometimes employed in modern topiary to guide untutored shears, but traditional topiary depends on patience and a steady hand; small-leaved ivy can be used to cover a cage and give the look of topiary in a few months. The hedge is a simple form of topiary used to create boundaries, walls or screens.
Topiaries are used all of the time indoors for some natural decor elements! These table center pieces are a great use of topiaries indoors! They bring a very designer look and a nice use of greens indoors!
Flanking topiaries in interior spaces always bring a fun symmetrical style. The stems come in all different lengths which I think adds to how charming these plants can be!
The outdoors is where topiaries really blossom into some true landscaping art! These are just a couple examples as to how amazing this work is and how beautiful it really is! If you ever get a chance to travel to a topiary garden, it is definitely a sight to see for sure!
